“Maybe it’ll stop raining right before we start shooting…” This seemed like wishful thinking last week as I drove up to Montreal with Carla & Colin of Emptycup Media in what seemed like never ending rain. They were there to assist me in what was to be a “one chance” engagement shoot as I don’t drive to Montreal too often, being a Toronto wedding photographer. We arrived at the Westin in Old Montreal just after 12:00 noon, and were scheduled to start shooting at 2:00. It had rained the entire day, and it didn’t look like there was going to be any break anytime soon.
“Okay, it looks like we’re just going to have to shoot in the rain. Let’s go for a walk and scout-out some sheltered pockets around the area.” I said, knowing that a rainy shoot was imminent. We were in a city that we weren’t familiar with, and had no roster of dry areas to shoot. We had to find some. Fast.
After walking a few blocks of Old Montreal in a rain that appeared to be getting worse, a chilly wind started having it’s way with our umbrellas. We were on a mission. We had about an hour to come up with a plan to shoot in a cold, windy downpour. We strolled past one location after another, uttering the depressing repetition of statements like “Oh, that would be a wicked backdrop…if it weren’t raining”, and “Wow…check that out…that would have been awesome”.
With about 45 minutes to go before the shoot, we broke for lunch. As we ate we came up with a plan for the shoot that was of military caliber. It wasn’t going to be fun, but we were going to make it work! So we headed back to the hotel, grabbed our gear, had a shot of tequila and met Priya & Anup in the lobby…
…And then the rain stopped.
It stopped raining at 2:00, the very moment when our shoot began.
We had a great time shooting around the old city, and I can’t thank Colin and Carla enough for joining me. They’re truly a talented couple of individuals, as well as an incredible team. I thought it just fitting that one of my favorite images from the shoot is one of Colin’s, and that’s the first image below. Priya and Anup, I hope you two had as much fun as we did. If I were actually counting my blessings, I know the weather for our shoot is at least one of them…
…And for those who might be wondering; YES, the rain resumed the moment we were finished shooting!
